"Wisdom and Compassion Make the World Beautiful", This Year's Buddha's Birthday Motto Chosen with Wish to Overcome Difficulties through Spirit of Wisdom and Compassion526042507d1600a15ff02c83f4fbbb0c_1519367

Congratulatory motto for the Buddha's Birthday of Buddhist Era 2562 (2018) has been chosen as follows, "Wisdom and Compassion Make the World Beautiful."  Buddha's Birthday Celebration Committee publicly announced the congratulatory motto of Buddha's Birthday on 20th of this month and began its promotion of this year's Yeon Deung Hoe, the lotus lantern festival.

This year's congratulatory motto entails the wish to create a new world through overcoming difficulties with the spirit of wisdom and compassion found in a proverb, "fight for right against wrong (破邪顯正)." The congratulatory motto was chosen to reflect the current state of affairs domestic and abroad where social inequality has been growing rapidly. The Buddha's Birthday Celebration Committee mentioned in its statement that "The core of Buddha's teaching was wisdom and compassion. Compassion without wisdom merely results in self-satisfaction while wisdom without compassion may harm others." Also mentioned in the statement is that “If we live this world with wisdom and compassion, we can not only make ourselves happy but also make a bright future for the unified Korea.”

Since last year, the Buddha's Birthday Celebration Committee has been selecting a congratulatory motto for the Buddha's birthday to be used along with the original slogan of "We too are like Buddha."
